Description:  Each square in this image is a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL). The center laser is activated by an electrical current supplied by a microscope probe tip, which appears as a dark cone-shaped object. Sandia Labs researchers were able to create a VCSEL that emits the 1.3 micron wavelength light necessary for longer distance fiber-optic transmissions.
