Description:  This scanning electron microscope image shows an actuator that moves a probe tip up and down. The probe tip is the small rectangle set on the near edge of the larger, waffle-shaped rectangle. CMU researchers plan to use an array of 6,400 of these actuators and tips to read and write data in a storage device built on a chip.
